The hour itself

What happens in an individual session?

The first part is usually you describing what has been happening and how long it has been going on. The counselor asks practical questions rather than clinical ones, and the aim of the first session is a shared understanding of the pattern, not a diagnosis.

Later sessions tend to narrow: one situation, what you did, what happened, and what a different response would cost you. You choose the pace and how much history you bring.

You do not have to arrive prepared

People often apologise for not explaining things well. That is the work, not a prerequisite for it.

  • No written history is required.
  • You can say that you would rather not discuss something yet.
  • You can use audio only, with your camera off.
  • You can switch between English, Urdu and Punjabi mid-sentence.

What people bring

What can you bring to it?

01

Something that keeps repeating

The same argument, the same avoidance, the same week. Repetition is the most useful material a session can have.

02

A decision you cannot settle

Work, study, marriage, moving abroad. Counseling does not make the decision, it makes the reasons visible.

03

A change you have noticed

Sleep, appetite, temper, concentration or interest that has shifted and stayed shifted.

04

Something you have not said aloud

Sometimes the point of the hour is that it is the first time the sentence has been spoken to anyone.

How many sessions do people usually take?

There is no standard number, and anyone who quotes you one before hearing the situation is guessing. Some people use a handful of sessions for a specific decision. Others continue for months while something long-standing is worked through.

Sessions here are booked one at a time. You are not asked to commit to a course, and stopping does not require a reason.

Package options exist on the fees page for people who prefer to book ahead, not as a requirement.

What are the limits of counseling?

Counseling can help you examine a pattern and consider what to do about it. It cannot guarantee an outcome, and it is not the right tool in a few situations.

  • Immediate danger to yourself or someone else: contact emergency services now.
  • Symptoms that are severe, sudden or worsening: medical assessment comes first.
  • A need for medication, a diagnosis on paper or a medical certificate: that is a psychiatrist or physician.
  • Ongoing harm at home: safety arrangements come before therapeutic work.

What the research says

  • Talking therapies involve speaking with a trained professional about your thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and are used for a wide range of difficulties. [1]
  • Most people living with a mental health condition do not receive effective care. Only about one in three people with depression gets formal mental health care. [2]
  • A 2018 systematic review comparing guided internet-based and face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy found the two formats gave broadly equivalent results, while noting more research is still needed for some conditions. [3]
