What brings couples in
What brings couples to marriage counseling?
These are the situations that come up most often. None of them means the marriage has failed.
Communication that has stopped working
Conversations that turn into arguments within a minute, or stop happening at all to avoid the argument.
In-law and joint family pressure
Divided loyalty, privacy in a shared home, and a disagreement between two people that four more are involved in.
In-laws and joint familyTrust after a breach
Whether repair is possible is a genuine question. It stays open while both of you look at what repair would require.
Intimacy and distance
Physical and emotional distance that has grown without either person deciding on it.
Money, work and migration
Long hours, a spouse working abroad, or financial strain that arrives in the marriage as blame.
Deciding whether to continue
Counseling does not push a marriage in either direction. It makes the decision an informed one.
The first session
What happens in the first session?
Both accounts get stated in full. The counselor slows the exchange so each person can finish, then names what happens between you rather than who started it. By the end of 90 minutes most couples have a clearer description of their own pattern than they arrived with.
Nothing is required in advance. You do not need a list, a timeline or agreement about what the problem is.
If your spouse will not attend
One spouse attending alone is common, and it is not a lesser version of the work.
- An individual session can examine your part of the pattern and your options.
- It cannot assess someone who is not in the room.
- It does not carry messages between spouses.
- Your spouse can join later if they decide to.
Does marriage counseling work?
Reviews of couple-focused therapy report improvement in communication and relationship satisfaction for many couples, and no improvement for some. Results depend on what both people are willing to do outside the session, which is why no honest practitioner quotes a success rate.
What counseling reliably provides is a structured place to examine a pattern with someone who is not part of the family. What happens next stays with the two of you.

What marriage counseling cannot do
Some limits are worth stating before you book rather than discovering in session three.
- It cannot make a decision for you about staying or separating.
- It cannot work on someone who is not present.
- It is not religious or legal advice, and it does not issue rulings.
- Where one partner is being hurt or threatened, safety arrangements come before joint sessions.

What the research says
- A review of a decade of research found couple therapy helped around 70% of couples who received it, with results comparable to individual therapy. [1]
- A review of 34 rigorous studies found relationship education programmes improved relationship quality and, in many cases, mental health and co-parenting, including when delivered online. [2]
- A 2018 systematic review comparing guided internet-based and face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy found the two formats gave broadly equivalent results, while noting more research is still needed for some conditions. [3]

Questions, answered
Questions people ask.
Does marriage counselling actually work?
Published reviews report that couple-focused therapy helps many couples with communication and satisfaction, but outcomes vary and no practitioner can promise a result. Counseling gives both people a structured place to examine a pattern; it cannot decide the outcome for you.
Can counselling help a marriage if only one spouse attends?
Yes, one spouse can attend alone. Individual sessions can still examine your part of a pattern, your options and how you respond. Joint work needs both partners present and willing.
How many marriage counselling sessions will we need?
There is no fixed number. Some couples use a handful of sessions for a specific decision, others continue for months. The practice does not sell a required course of sessions.
Is marriage counselling acceptable in a Pakistani or Muslim household?
Counseling is a confidential conversation about a private matter, and many clients attend without telling extended family. The practice does not give religious rulings; it works with the values and decisions you bring to the session.
How much does marriage counseling cost in Pakistan?
At The Bonding Corner a 90-minute couple session is Rs. 3,000. Packages of 3, 6 or 10 sessions lower that to Rs. 2,550, Rs. 2,400 or Rs. 2,250 a session.
