Premarital counseling at The Bonding Corner is a structured conversation before marriage about expectations, finances, living arrangements, family roles, children and how disagreements will be handled. Sessions are held online with psychologist Zahid Sohail in English, Urdu or Punjabi, and can be attended together or alone.

What it is
What is premarital counseling?
A structured conversation before marriage about the practical arrangements that couples usually assume they agree on. It is not a compatibility test and it does not issue a verdict.
Most couples discover that they have each been imagining a slightly different arrangement, in good faith, and never said it out loud because it seemed obvious.
What it is not
Worth stating plainly, because expectations vary.
- Not a religious ruling or an Islamic legal opinion.
- Not a screening test, and not a medical assessment.
- Not a recommendation about whether to marry.
- Not a report for either family.
Topics
What does it cover?
The list is adjusted to the couple. These are the areas that come up most.
Money
Who earns, who decides, what is shared, what is sent home, and what counts as a big purchase.
Living arrangements
Joint family or separate home, whose family, for how long, and what privacy will look like.
In-laws and joint familyWork and study
Whether both will work after marriage, travel, relocation, and how that changes if children arrive.
Children
Whether, when, how many, and who will carry which part of the responsibility.
Family roles and obligations
Time, money and decisions owed to parents and siblings on both sides.
How you will disagree
The most useful topic of all. What each of you does when upset, and what the other reads it as.
When should you start?
Most couples find it useful in the months before the wedding, once the decision is settled and practical questions have started to become real. Early enough that a disagreement can be worked on, late enough that the arrangements are concrete.
Couples in a long engagement, or in an arranged match where the two of you have spoken only briefly, sometimes start earlier.
If you are already married, marriage counseling is the right page.

What it cannot decide for you
Premarital counseling makes a decision better informed. It does not make it.
- It will not tell you whether to go ahead with the marriage.
- It will not arbitrate between two families.
- It will not produce a document either family can rely on.
- It cannot work on a fiance who is not in the session.

What the research says
- A review of 34 rigorous studies found relationship education programmes improved relationship quality and, in many cases, mental health and co-parenting, including when delivered online. [1]
- A review of a decade of research found couple therapy helped around 70% of couples who received it, with results comparable to individual therapy. [2]

Questions, answered
Questions people ask.
When should premarital counselling start?
Most couples find it useful in the months before the wedding, once the decision is made and practical questions about money, living arrangements and family roles are becoming real.
Is premarital counselling common in Pakistan?
It is less established here than in some countries, but interest is rising, and the topics are practical rather than clinical: expectations, finances, family roles, children and how disagreements will be handled.
What is discussed in premarital counseling?
Usually money, family expectations, living arrangements, children, work, and how each of you handles disagreement. The aim is to find out what you have not actually discussed yet.
How much does premarital counseling cost?
It is booked at the couple rate, Rs. 3,000 for 90 minutes. Couple packages lower the per-session rate if you want several conversations before the wedding.
Is premarital counseling only for couples with problems?
No. Most people who book it are not in difficulty. It is a structured way to have conversations that are easy to postpone until they become arguments later.
