Two people walk side by side along a quiet street, talking

Scope

What counts as a relationship concern?

Anything that keeps happening between two people and does not resolve when you talk about it. Married, engaged, separated or undecided, the work is the same: find the pattern, then find where it can be interrupted.

This page exists for people whose situation does not fit neatly under marriage or couples counseling, including people deciding whether a relationship should continue at all.

Common patterns

What a session focuses on

01

The loop, not the incident

The argument you had on Tuesday matters less than the shape it takes every time.

02

What each person is protecting

Most repeated conflict is two people defending something neither has named out loud.

03

Trust and its repair

What repair would require, in specific actions rather than reassurance.

04

Deciding, when deciding is the problem

Staying undecided has its own cost. Counseling makes that cost visible rather than choosing for you.

Coming alone or together

An individual session examines your part of the pattern, your options and what you keep doing in response to the other person. It cannot assess someone who is not present, and it does not carry messages.

A joint session lets both accounts be heard in one place, with someone whose job is to slow the exchange down. Both are legitimate starting points, and people often move from one to the other.

Where one person is being hurt, controlled or threatened, joint sessions are not appropriate and safety arrangements come first.

What the research says

  • A review of a decade of research found couple therapy helped around 70% of couples who received it, with results comparable to individual therapy. [1]
  • A review of 34 rigorous studies found relationship education programmes improved relationship quality and, in many cases, mental health and co-parenting, including when delivered online. [2]

Questions, answered

Questions people ask.

What is the difference between relationship and marriage counseling?

The work is much the same. Relationship counseling is the broader term and covers people who are not married, including engaged couples and long-term partners.

Can I come to relationship counseling on my own?

Yes. Many people do. An individual session can examine your part of a pattern and your options, which is useful whether or not your partner ever attends.

How much does relationship counseling cost?

Rs. 3,000 for a 90-minute session with both partners, or Rs. 2,000 for a 60-minute individual session if you are attending alone.

Will the counselor take sides?

No. The session is used to find the pattern underneath rather than to decide who is right, and no verdict is issued at the end of it.

How long does relationship counseling take?

There is no standard number of sessions. Some people use a handful for a specific decision, others continue for months. Sessions are booked one at a time.
