Later than people expect

What grief can look like months later

The weeks immediately after a death are usually full of people. The difficulty often arrives later, once the house is quiet, the visits have stopped and everyone else has returned to their own lives.

Grief is also not limited to death. Separation, a marriage ending, migration, estrangement, infertility and the loss of health all produce it, and all of them are harder to talk about because nobody arrives with food.

What people describe

None of these is a sign that you are doing grief incorrectly.

  • Functioning normally and then losing an afternoon without warning
  • Anger, at the person who died or at people who say the wrong thing
  • Guilt about a conversation that did or did not happen
  • Relief, and then guilt about the relief
  • Being told to move on by people who mean well
  • Avoiding the places, photographs or names entirely

In session

What a session focuses on

01

Saying it without managing anyone

Most grieving people spend their conversations protecting the other person. A session removes that requirement.

02

The specifics

Not grief in general, but this person, this relationship and what was unfinished in it.

03

Grief inside a family

Families grieve at different speeds and in different styles, which produces its own conflict.

Family counseling
04

Living alongside it

The aim is not to stop missing someone. It is for the loss to stop taking the whole day.

Grief, and when it is something more

Grief and depression overlap, and the difference matters because it changes what helps. Grief tends to come in waves and leaves room for other feeling between them. Persistent low mood that flattens everything, for weeks without relief, is worth medical review as well as counseling.

This page does not present stages of grief as fact. The stage model is widely quoted and poorly supported as a description of how most people actually grieve.

If you are thinking about ending your life, contact local emergency services or go to a hospital emergency department now.

What the research says

  • Grief does not follow fixed stages or a set order. NHS guidance suggests getting support when low mood lasts more than two weeks or you are struggling to cope. [1]
  • Talking therapies involve speaking with a trained professional about your thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and are used for a wide range of difficulties. [2]

Questions, answered

Questions people ask.

How long should grief last?

There is no correct timetable, and being further along than someone expects is not a failure. Counseling is worth considering when grief has stopped moving at all.

Is grief counseling only for bereavement?

No. The same work applies to other losses: a marriage, a pregnancy, health, a country you left, or a future you had assumed.

What does grief counseling involve?

Mostly room to describe what happened and what it cost, without being moved on. The aim is not to resolve the loss but to make it possible to carry.

Can I bring a family member?

Yes. A 90-minute session at Rs. 3,000 allows two people to attend. Individual sessions of 60 minutes are Rs. 2,000.

Is it too late to get help for an old loss?

No. People often book years afterwards, frequently when something unrelated brings it back. There is no point at which it stops being a reasonable thing to discuss.
