Counseling for in-law and joint family conflict at The Bonding Corner looks at boundaries, divided loyalty, privacy inside a shared home and the way one couple’s argument travels through a household. Sessions are held online with psychologist Zahid Sohail in English, Urdu or Punjabi, individually or jointly.

The situation

What this concern usually looks like

A disagreement that would take ten minutes between two people takes three weeks because six are involved. Comments get relayed rather than said. Loyalty gets tested in small daily decisions about time, money and whose opinion carries.

Nobody in this situation is usually a villain. Several people are protecting something legitimate, in a house where there is not enough room for all of it at once.

What people describe

Living arrangements in Pakistan make several of these unavoidable, which is precisely why they need managing rather than winning.

  • Feeling caught between a spouse and a parent
  • Privacy that does not exist in a shared home
  • Decisions about money or children being made by someone else
  • Comments passed on through a third family member
  • A spouse who will not intervene, or who intervenes too late
  • Guilt for wanting distance from people you love

In session

What a session focuses on

01

Who actually decides what

Mapping where decisions really get made is often the first clarifying step.

02

Boundaries that survive contact

A boundary that requires someone else’s cooperation to exist is not yet a boundary.

03

The spouse in the middle

Divided loyalty is its own problem, separate from the in-law relationship itself.

04

What you can change alone

The most useful outcome is usually something you can do without anyone else’s agreement.

Attending alone when the family will not join

Common, and workable. An individual session looks at your position in the pattern: what you do in response, what it costs you, and which responses are actually available.

What it will not do is assess an absent family member on your account, or take a side in a dispute where only one person is in the room.

If both spouses will attend, marriage counseling is usually the better route. For wider household work, see family counseling.

What counseling cannot change here

Being realistic about this saves months.

  • It cannot change a family member who is not attending.
  • It cannot settle an inheritance, property or financial dispute.
  • It cannot make a shared house private.
  • Where someone is being hurt or threatened, safety arrangements come before any of this work.

What the research says

  • A review of a decade of research found couple therapy helped around 70% of couples who received it, with results comparable to individual therapy. [1]
  • The WHO defines stress as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation, and lists a daily routine, enough sleep and staying connected to trusted people among the first things that help. [2]

Questions, answered

Questions people ask.

Can counseling help with in-law conflict?

Yes. It is one of the most common reasons people book here. The work looks at where the pressure actually sits and what you can change, which is rarely everything.

Do my in-laws need to attend?

No. Most of this work is done individually or as a couple. Joint sessions involving wider family are possible but are not the starting point.

Will what I say get back to my family?

No. Session content is confidential within the limits set out in the privacy policy, and nothing is reported to your family or your in-laws.

Can I attend without my spouse knowing?

Yes. Booking an individual session is your decision alone. If privacy at home is difficult, audio-only sessions or WhatsApp text plans are less conspicuous than a video call.

How much does this cost?

Rs. 2,000 for a 60-minute individual session or Rs. 3,000 for a 90-minute session with your spouse. The first 10-minute introductory call is free.
