In danger right now
Call first, explain later
If someone has taken an overdose, is hurt, is threatening to end their life, or is being harmed, call an emergency number straight away.
While help is on the way
- Stay with the person. Do not leave them alone.
- Move medicines, blades, pesticides or anything they could use out of reach.
- Speak calmly and keep it simple. Listening matters more than advice.
- If you can, take them to the nearest hospital emergency department.
- If you are the one at risk, go where other people are, and tell someone now.

You do not need the right words
Helplines are used to people who cry, go quiet or cannot explain. A single sentence is enough to start:
- “I am not okay and I need to talk to someone.”
- “I have been thinking about ending my life.”
- “I am worried about my sister. She said she does not want to live.”
- “I do not feel safe at home.”
If speaking is not safe where you are, ask whether the service can reply by SMS or WhatsApp.
If someone you love is in crisis
- Ask them directly whether they are thinking of ending their life. Asking does not put the idea in their head.
- Listen without arguing, lecturing or bringing in religion as blame.
- Do not leave them alone if they are in danger. Call 1122.
- Help them call Umang, or sit with them while they do.
- Afterwards, help them find ongoing support, not just one call.

When it is not an emergency
Helplines are for urgent support. For ongoing help with anxiety, low mood, marriage or family difficulties, grief or stress, regular counseling usually helps more than a single call. The World Health Organization notes that suicide is preventable with timely, evidence-based support, and that most people with mental health conditions do not yet receive effective care.
The Bonding Corner offers online sessions with psychologist Zahid Sohail in English, Urdu or Punjabi, starting with a free 10-minute call.
