When you cannot stop googling your symptoms

Short answer

Searching symptoms brings relief for a few minutes and then raises anxiety higher than before, because reassurance is temporary and the habit of seeking it teaches the brain that the threat was real. Health anxiety is treated by reducing checking and reassurance-seeking, not by finding better information.

It starts with something real. A headache that has lasted three days. A lump you had not noticed. A flutter in your chest. You search it, because who would not, and forty minutes later you have read about four conditions, two of them serious, and you are less calm than when you started.

Then you search again, more specifically, to rule out the frightening one. Then you check the spot again to see if it has changed. Then you ask someone whether it looks normal to them. Each of these brings about twenty minutes of relief, and then it comes back slightly worse.

Why searching makes it worse

This is the part that feels wrong when you first hear it, because searching feels like responsible caution.

Anxiety is sustained by what you do about it. Every time you search, check or ask, two things happen. You get short-term relief, which makes the behaviour more likely next time. And you teach your brain that the threat was serious enough to require action, which makes the alarm louder next time. The relief is real and it is the mechanism by which the problem grows.

It is the same reason the reassurance of a doctor lasts about a week. The reassurance was never the missing piece.

What health anxiety actually looks like

  • Checking a part of your body repeatedly, sometimes many times a day.
  • Searching symptoms, then searching for reassurance to undo the first search.
  • Asking family whether something looks alright, and asking again a day later.
  • Or the opposite: avoiding doctors entirely because a test might confirm something.
  • Monitoring normal sensations that everyone has and most people never notice.
  • Feeling briefly fine after an appointment, then needing another one.

The avoidance version matters, because people who avoid do not see themselves as anxious about health at all. They think of themselves as someone who does not like hospitals.

The thing about bodies

A healthy body produces a constant stream of odd sensations. Twinges, flutters, brief numbness, aches that arrive and leave, a heartbeat you can suddenly feel. Most people do not notice any of it, not because it is not happening but because their attention is elsewhere.

Once you begin scanning for sensations, you find them, because they were always there. The scanning produces the evidence. That is why the reassurance never holds: there is always a new sensation tomorrow.

How it is actually treated

Not with better information. If information cured health anxiety, nobody with a clear scan would still be frightened.

The work is on the behaviour, and it is uncomfortable, which is why it usually needs someone alongside you.

Delay rather than forbid

Telling yourself never to search again fails within a day. Postponing works. When the urge comes, note the time and agree to search in an hour. Most urges do not survive the hour, and the ones that do have lost a great deal of force.

Cut checking down deliberately

If you check something eight times a day, four is the next target, not zero. Anxiety rises when you reduce checking, then settles at a lower level than before. That rise is the part people cannot get through alone, because it feels like proof that checking was necessary.

Stop asking for reassurance, and tell your family why

This one needs the household on board, because the people who love you are giving you the reassurance out of kindness. “I am trying to stop asking, so please tell me you are not going to answer” is a reasonable thing to ask of a spouse or a parent.

Have a real medical plan

This is the honest balance. Health anxiety does not make anyone immune to illness, and the goal is not to ignore your body. The goal is one sensible rule agreed in advance: something new and persistent gets one appointment, and the result of that appointment is accepted. One appointment, not a second opinion on the second opinion.

Where this comes from

It very often follows something. A death in the family, particularly a sudden one. Your own serious illness or a near miss. Becoming a parent. Reaching the age a parent was when they became ill. There is usually a point where the world stopped feeling reliably safe, and the checking began as a way to make it safe again.

That is worth knowing, because it makes the behaviour make sense rather than seem foolish, and it is usually the more useful thing to talk about.

Getting help with it

Anxiety counseling handles this pattern directly. The work is practical and structured: mapping your own loop, reducing checking at a pace you can tolerate, and dealing with whatever the fear is actually attached to.

If the searching is at the point where it is taking hours of your day, or you are avoiding medical care entirely, that is the point to arrange something rather than manage it alone. A ten-minute introductory call costs nothing and is enough to describe the pattern.

Common questions

Is health anxiety the same as hypochondria?

It is the same difficulty under a more accurate and less dismissive name. The older term carried a suggestion that the person was inventing symptoms, which is not what happens. The sensations are real; it is the interpretation of them that becomes the problem.

Why does a doctor's reassurance only last a few days?

Because reassurance treats the symptom rather than the cycle. Relief reinforces the habit of seeking it, and the underlying alarm is left untouched, so it returns with the next sensation.

Should I stop seeing doctors altogether?

No. The aim is proportionate care, not no care. A useful rule agreed in advance is that anything new and persistent gets one appointment, and the outcome of that appointment is accepted rather than re-checked.

How do I stop googling symptoms?

Postponing works better than forbidding. When the urge arrives, agree to search in an hour instead of never. Most urges fade within that hour, and the habit weakens without a confrontation you are likely to lose.

Can health anxiety cause real physical symptoms?

Yes. Sustained anxiety produces genuine physical effects including a raised heart rate, chest tightness, muscle pain, digestive trouble and dizziness. The symptoms are real even when the feared disease is not present.

How long does counseling for health anxiety take?

It varies, but this is one of the more responsive patterns because the cycle is visible and measurable. People often notice a change within the first several weeks once checking behaviour starts reducing.

Ten minutes is enough to find out whether this helps.

What the research says

  • Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates 470 million people had one in 2023. [1]
  • The WHO describes psychological support, mainly talking with a trained professional, as an essential treatment for anxiety. [1]
