Unemployed after your degree: coping with the waiting

Short answer

Unemployment after graduation often brings shame, anxiety, low mood and loss of routine, made worse by family pressure. What helps is a daily structure, treating the job search like part-time work, building skills or experience meanwhile, limiting comparison, and staying connected. If hopelessness sets in, support matters.

Pakistan produces many more graduates than jobs. So thousands of young people spend months or years applying, waiting and being asked by every relative whether they have found something yet.

What it can feel like

  • Shame, especially facing parents who paid for education.
  • Anxiety with every application and every silence.
  • Loss of routine: sleeping late, days blurring together.
  • Comparing yourself with classmates who got jobs.
  • Feeling useless, a burden on the family.
  • Low mood that deepens the longer it lasts.

Why it hits mental health

Work gives structure, purpose, social contact and identity. Losing all of these at once, while under financial and family pressure, is a known risk for anxiety and depression. The WHO notes routine and staying connected are among the first things that help with stress, and unemployment removes both.

What helps

Create a daily structure

Wake at a set time, get dressed, have a plan for the day. Structure protects mood.

Treat the search as part-time work

Set hours for applications and stop at the end of them. Searching all day, every day, leads to burnout.

Quality over quantity

Tailored applications and personal contacts usually work better than hundreds of generic ones.

Build something meanwhile

A short course, freelance work, volunteering, a small project. It adds to your CV and restores a sense of progress.

Use your network

Many jobs in Pakistan come through contacts. Tell people you are looking, politely and specifically.

Handle relatives’ questions

A short answer: “I am applying in these areas and doing this course meanwhile.” Then move on.

Stay connected

Isolation deepens low mood. Keep seeing friends, even if you cannot spend much.

When it becomes depression

If you feel hopeless, have lost interest in everything, cannot get out of bed, or feel your family would be better off without you, please get help. Depression affects about 5% of adults and is treatable. For thoughts of suicide, call Umang on 0311 7786264 or Rescue 1122.

Counseling for students and young adults and depression counseling are available online. Cost is a real concern when unemployed, so see free online counseling in Pakistan too.

What the research says

  • The WHO defines stress as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation, and lists a daily routine, enough sleep and staying connected to trusted people among the first things that help. [1]
  • About 5.2% of adults experience depression, and it is around 1.5 times more common in women than in men. [2]
